Reverence and mobilization – as tributes to great leaders of the historical struggles for social justice should always be – was Cuban workers’ commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of universal proletarian leader Vladimir Ilich Lenin, in whose honor this year’s May Day mobilization was called.

On Havana’s Lenin Hill, a small group of trade union leaders, headed by Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, Party Political Bureau member and general secretary of the Cuban Workers Federation (CTC), dedicated a floral tribute to the legendary Bolshevik, who played a key role in the Russian Revolution, the greatest lesson in the annals of history of what the emancipated working class can achieve in unity of thought and action, guided by socialist principles. The impact of COVID-19 can already be measured and will be assessed in the future by the striking numbers of people infected, the unacceptable numbers of deaths, the unquestionable damages to the world economy, production, trade, employment and personal income of millions of people. It is a crisis that goes well beyond the scope of health.

The pandemic has emerged and spread amidst a scenario previously marked by overwhelming economic and social inequalities within and among nations. With the unprecedented wave of migrants and refugees, xenophobia and racial discrimination have reemerged. The remarkable advances of science and technology, particularly in the area of health, focus in the pharmaceutical business and commercialization of medicine, rather than in securing the wellbeing and healthy living of majorities.

COVID-19 has come into a world overburdened by production and consumption patterns, especially in highly industrialized countries and among the elites of developing countries, that are unsustainable and incompatible with the finite character of natural resources upon which life on the planet depends. To learn about progress being made in scientific research to identify new products to treat COVID-19, Granma interviews Dr. Eduardo Martínez Díaz, president of the BioCubaFarma Enterprise Group:

-What has the Cuban biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry been doing to confront COVID-19?

-Our Enterprise Group has a specific plan with four fundamental components which are

*Supply medicines included in the COVID-19treatment protocol established by the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap).

*Research and development to provide new products and knowledge to combat this virus

*Cooperation with other countries in supplying drugs to fight the pandemic

*Take steps internally within our companies to protect workers and guarantee operations under current circumstances

-How many products does BioCubaFarma currently provide for Cuba’s COVID-19 treatment protocol?

-At the beginning, 22 medicines were identified, several anti-virals, primarily Interferon, and an important group of drugs for hospital use with patients in different phases, including those in serious and critical condition. We currently have stocks of these for thousands of patients and continue to expand production capacity.
