Excerpts from Fidel’s speech delivered during the memorial ceremony for Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara, in Havana’s Plaza de la Revolución, October 18, 1967
“Che was one of those people who was liked immediately, for his simplicity, his character, his naturalness, his comradely attitude, his personality, his originality … the type of man who, when a difficult mission must be completed, doesn’t wait for you to ask him to take on the mission …”
“This was one of his principal characteristics: his willingness to instantly volunteer for the most dangerous mission. And naturally this aroused admiration – and twice the usual admiration, for a fellow combatant fighting alongside us who had not been born here, a person of profound ideas, a person in whose mind dreams boiled of struggle in other parts of the continent, and who nonetheless was so altruistic, so selfless, so willing to always do the most difficult things, to constantly risk his life.”

Antonio Maceo Grajales (1845-1896), renowned leader and Major General of the Liberation Army, was a staunch fighter for Cuba’s independence and is widely considered to be a master military strategist.

He is believed to have been involved in over 800 battles, the majority during the independence struggles of 1868, and was wounded 26 times.

But, what makes a man join such a fearsome war, one which caused him such heartache? He didn’t live to see the end.

All people of unmatched greatness are connected by a common desire, to see their homeland free, free of the yoke of oppression and exploitation of their fellow citizens. And there is no doubt that Antonio Maceo was one of those people.

José Martí would say of him: “We must pay heed to what he says, because Maceo has as much strength in his mind as he does in his arm.”

Remarks by Miguel M. Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, President of the Councils of State and Ministers, on receiving the Order of the Liberators of Venezuela, Caracas, May 30, 2018, “Year 60 of the Revolution”

(Council of State transcript / GI translation)

COMPAÑERO Nicolás Maduro Moros, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela;

Members of the delegations of Venezuela and Cuba:

With pride and reverence I begin to speak, as Martí said. I do so aware that, having been judged worthy of the Order of the Liberators of Venezuela, it is to Cuba, to Cuban men and women, to whom this immense honor is conferred.

I humbly receive it, on behalf of a heroic and noble people, and I interpret this as an act of undeserved generosity toward myself, and of just recognition to the Cuban people, who have followed, through glorious pages of sacrifice the preaching of Bolívar and Martí to make the dreams of independence and liberty of these heroes a reality.

It was Bolívar who envisaged from that distant era the threat posed by U.S. imperialism to genuine Latin American and Caribbean integration, which still has a long way to go to materialize, but which merits all our efforts.
