Cuba’s National Assembly of People’s Power, on its last day of debates this Wednesday, will have a moment dedicated to the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP).

The extraordinary session will commemorate the 18th anniversary of the creation of the regional mechanism, as well as the years of cooperation, solidarity, and Latin American and Caribbean integration among the countries of the bloc.

ALBA-TCP was created on December 14, 2004, through an agreement signed in Havana between the then presidents of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, and Cuba, Fidel Castro, as a response to the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), promoted by the United States and finally rejected by Latin America in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 2005.

Since its creation, it has maintained solidarity, justice, and cooperation as fundamental principles of the existing relations between member states.

It is also a political, economic, and social alliance in defense of the independence, self-determination, and identity of the people, by its precepts.

Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts, Nevis, Grenada, and Cuba are members of this political coordination mechanism.

The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez invoked more solidarity, more understanding, more cooperation and more unity among the Caribbean nations while speaking at the Eighth Caricom-Cuba Summit, held on Tuesday on the island of Barbados.
The event commemorated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the first four nations of that bloc and the largest of the Antilles. In the opening session, the Cuban Head of State invited to reflect on the significance of “the achievements made in these years and how much more we can do for the welfare of our nations.”
“I bring you an embrace from Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, admirer of the dignity of our Caribbean brothers and tireless defender of the relationship between our peoples and governments,” he said.
He evoked Fidel’s contribution to the growing rapprochement of the region and expressed Cuba’s gratitude for their “unwavering” solidarity and friendship of the Caribbean.
The heads of state and government attending the Summit also accompanied President Díaz-Canel in a tribute to the 73 victims of the terrorist attack on a Cubana de Aviación plane in mid-flight, which took place in 1976, near the coast of Barbados.
At the tribute, the dignitaries in attendance agreed to commemorate Caricom-Cuba Anti-Terrorism Day every October 6 because as host Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley said, “the memory of those victims must always inspire us to preserve our Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.”
“Cuba can only be on the list, if it existed, of the victims of terrorism,” said Díaz-Canel.
At the end of an emotional day, the president met with members of the medical brigade working on the island, Cuban residents and members of the diplomatic mission.

More than four million doses of the anti-COVID-19 vaccine Abdala were delivered to the Mexican Health Secretariat, after the arrival of a first batch to that country on Friday. The vaccine will be used in the ongoing immunization of the adult population, informed the BioCubaFarma Business Group.

Regarding this important event, Jorge Luis Perdomo Di Lella, Cuba’s deputy prime minister, highlighted in his Twitter account that the arrival of these vaccines in Mexico strengthens the collaboration between Cuba and that sister country in the biopharmaceutical sector.

According to a report by El Financiero, shared by Perdomo Di Lella, the shipment consists of 4,092,500 doses that will be applied to adults, as reported by the Ministry of Health. The package landed at Felipe Angeles International Airport, transported by a Mexican Air Force plane.

The arrival of these doses comes almost a year after the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (COFEPRIS) approved their emergency use, on December 29, 2021.

With this new shipment, Mexico is close to 200 million doses of anti-COVID vaccines received. With the shipment from Havana, the figure is 193,231,845 vaccines, the report highlighted.

During Phase III clinical trials carried out in Cuba, Abdala showed an efficacy of 92.28 % against symptomatic disease, with a three-dose schedule, and 100 % efficiency against severe forms and death.
