A hurricane in a few hours destroys us faster than we can recover, that is a first logic that must be had; but that cannot defeat us, what we have to do is unite efforts, unite talents, unite arms, unite disposition.

People are also shocked, we have to get out of that lethargy of affectation and start working, and then we see how with that work we begin to advance day by day, ripping pieces out of the affectation.

It must be said that after five days Mayabeque is practically recovered, Havana is quite recovered; the Isle of Youth was recovered. The provinces of Artemisa and Pinar del Río, where the damage was greatest, remain more complicated. To the same extent that the others are finishing, more forces are coming here; but what has been done is heroic.

I know that this causes a lot of discomfort in people because in addition to the accumulated situation that we already had in life, it lasts, then comes another group of affectations that cause damage, harden daily life; but here we have had cyclones in which, to recover, we have taken 19 or 20 days. There is an important part of the provinces that have already recovered in five days; I am convinced that with intense work next week this is going to have another face, and then, the next week, we will be almost fully recovered, fundamentally in electricity, communications and we will start with housing. Housing will always take us longer; but when one sees that there is the capacity for mobilization, Continue reading The hurricane cannot defeat us

Pinar del Río after Hurricane Ian

With the brutal force of a category 3 hurricane, “Ian” left a trail of pain in its path through the west of the country that will take time, effort and many resources to erase.

Damage to civil and state infrastructure, effects on the electrical service and communications, flooding due to heavy rains, penetrations of the sea, and losses of several crops, were, until last night, among the preliminary effects associated with this meteorological phenomenon.

And although the epicenter of his scourge was suffered by the territory of Pinar del Río, in the provinces of Havana, Mayabeque and Artemisa, as well as in the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud, “Ian” has also left his painful mark, with a economic balance yet to be quantified.

THE CAPITAL REMAINS ALERT

Despite the fact that hurricane “Ian” was already moving away from Cuba at the close of this Tuesday, Havana woke up today on alert due to the possible occurrence of winds and rains, as well as strong swells in low-lying areas.

This was noted at the meeting of the Provincial Defense Council of the capital, which was attended by Esteban Lazo Hernández, a member of the Political Bureau and President of the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP).

At that meeting, the meteorologist Yinelis Bermúdez warned that, when “Ian” left Cuban territory and traveled towards the Florida Strait, it would gain in intensity, causing strong swells on the north coast of Havana for this day, with waves that can reaching three meters in height and with the danger of flooding in low-lying areas.

However, in the province there were already reports of damage to the electrical service, the telephone line, and the water supply, in addition to reports of fallen trees and partial landslides in the municipalities of 10 de Octubre, Arroyo Naranjo, Marianao, and Habana Vieja.

Similarly, more than 14,000 people continued to be evacuated, some 5,900 of them in the homes of relatives and friends, and another 8,000 in protection centers. Continue reading Cuba: Pinar del Río after Hurricane Ian

In the Cuban electricity industry not a minute has been lost, there is no discouragement in any of the workers. Photo: Cuban News Agency (ACN in Spanish)
The National Electric System (SEN in Spanish) is expected to recover 489 megawatts (MW) currently unavailable and 531 MW through other investments, as part of the gradual recovery of the electric system, an essential strategy in view of the difficult conditions the sector is currently facing, which affect the stability of the electric service to the population and the economy.
Liván Arronte Cruz, Minister of Energy and Mines recalled on Wednesday’s Round Table that SEN continues to face complex circumstances, since the thermal power plants (CTE in Spanish) Máximo Gómez, in Mariel, and Lidio Ramón Pérez, in Felton, Holguín, suffered breakdowns that made it impossible to comply with the commitment to guarantee the generation for these summer months thus losing the minimum operating reserve in the system to cover the demand.
“As it happens with every extraordinary event, the failures have been investigated by multidisciplinary teams, integrated by the competent authorities and it has been demonstrated that there was no negligence or intentionality,” he pointed out.
In the case of the Mariel thermoelectric plant, the breakdown is in unit 7, where a fire occurred, which also damaged systems and disabled unit 6, which had been in operation just for a few months, he pointed out.
The replacement for the damaged spare parts and equipment have a delivery window of more than 26 weeks, which is why it has not yet been possible to repair this unit.
At Felton, work was carried out for 120 days, 24 hours a day. Although the fire that took place there was not of great magnitude, it affected technological systems, especially the main columns of that unit, and for that reason the repair will require practically dismantling the boiler, he said.
