In a socialist democracy, power must be socialized; the people have the capacity to construct the revolutionary project, with their daily work and criticism of what is poorly done. This is why the First Secretary of the Party Central Committee and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, is in Sancti Spiritus, leading a comprehensive visit by the Secretariat and its support staff, underway since January 19.
The anti-Cuban press speaks of elites, but it is Díaz-Canel and other members of the Secretariat, who are in modest neighborhoods and rural areas to understand the problems there, listening to residents and emphasizing the opportunity they have to join in making change.
His first stop was the Agramonte neighborhood in the Jesús María People’s Council, to review how much has been done since the 8th Congress, in this community in transformation.
There, the president visited the Sports and Recreation Complex, a medical office and produce market.
Next, Díaz-Canel moved on to Yaguajay, where he toured the Caonao Valley Agroindustrial Grain Enterprise. He was accompanied by Roberto Morales Ojeda, the Central Committee’s Secretary of Organization and Cadre Policy. They visited Batey Colorado, one of the four production poles affiliated with the company, which specializes in grain production and has mechanical irrigation.
There, Juan José González, the Ministry of Agriculture’s provincial representative, reported on the diversification of production. “Of the 5,214 hectare under cultivation, 3,000 are devoted to various crops: sorghum, beans, corn, root vegetables, fruits, greens… for the state wholesaler. They also deliver 800,000 liters of milk annually.”
The delegation also visited the center’s rustic greenhouses, where they confirmed the quality of productions and the export capacity being developed.
Díaz-Canel and Morales Ojeda then visited the Melanio Hernández sugar mill in Tuinucú, where they conversed with workers about the plant’s electrical generation system based on organic waste and the sale of energy to the Electric Company, essential to boosting the mill’s efficiency.
At the end of the afternoon, Díaz-Canel and Morales Ojeda met with professors and students of José Martí University of Sancti Spíritus, where they listened to the experiences and contributions being made to the agricultural and industrial sectors in the province.
Rogelio Polanco, another member of the Secretariat and head of the Central Committee’s Ideological Department, met with university students in the morning, as well, and visited media outlets, the Casa de la Guayabera, the Colmenita Espirituana children’s theater project and the Oscar Fernandez Morera Gallery.

“In Cuba, education is truly inclusive, there is gender parity and when any difference between males and females is noted, those doing better are the females,” stated Minister of Education Ena Elsa Velázquez Cobiella, referring to results of the Regional Comparative and Explanatory Study ERCE-2019, conducted by Unesco, in terms of socio-emotional indicators.
She added that the research also confirmed that in our island country, there is no difference between rural and urban education, or in the achievement of students from families in different socioeconomic situations, stating, “We are convinced that we have met the sustainable development goals through 2030, on the quantitative order.”
Accomplishments like these make clear that Cuban education remains one of the great achievements of the Revolution and one of its fundamental pillars. Referring to the research conducted, the Minister said, “One factor studied was the acceptance of diversity on the part of students. In the case of Cuba, this indicator is well above the average. We are at 93%, and the regional average is 85%. The same can be seen in terms of self-regulation in school, in which we showed 87%, higher than the regional average (74%), as well as in empathy, which 70% of our students demonstrate, higher than the average of 55%.”

(Shorthand Versions – Presidency of the Republic)

Dear Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution;

Commanders of the Revolution and of the Rebel Army who are with us;

Dear comrade Esteban Lazo, President of the National Assembly of People’s Power;

Representatives, teachers who are listening to us:

We conclude this Legislature on a day of extraordinary significance for Cuba, December 22, Educator’s Day and the 60th anniversary of the Literacy Campaign, the first step on the road to cultural emancipation that opened the doors of knowledge for all, placing our small Third World nation at the forefront of education and science in some subjects.
Happy day, teachers of Cuba, education workers at all levels! I ask for a round of applause for all those who became teachers, which is to become creators (Applause).
The richness and intensity of the analyses we have participated in during these days and the accountability reports allow me to not address some issues at the end of a period of work that cannot be summarized in words alone.
