For those who “to do is the best way to say” -as expressed by Apostle José Martí-, death is not synonymous with oblivion. Proof of this is the legacy of Reverend Lucius Walker, which endures even 15 years after his physical departure.
Walker, who was born in New Jersey in 1930, became involved in the movement for the civil rights of African-Americans, guided by Reverend Martin Luther King.
“In addition to being a father, grandfather, social worker and educator, he was also a social activist dedicated to various causes related to justice,” said his daughter Gail Walker, on the anniversary of Lucius Walker’s death on September 7.
She remarked that the reverend fought against the wounds of African-American society: segregation in schools, public transportation and other areas of life, so his commitment to racial equality was a constant in his life.
But it was his relationship with Cuba that cemented his legacy as an advocate for social justice and international solidarity. He dedicated himself to building bridges of solidarity that challenged the economic blockade imposed on the island, while his struggle in the United States continued.
Walker founded Pastors for Peace, an organization that led more than 20 humanitarian caravans in support of Cuba, overcoming the various obstacles placed by the enemies of the Revolution, including U.S. Government.
His caravans, composed of U.S. citizens, not only transported humanitarian aid, but were also a way to challenge the official narrative in the North about the largest of the Antilles, and thus demonstrate solidarity with its people. Walker understood that the blockade not only affected the national economy, but also harmed the most vulnerable.
He made his own the struggle for the return to the island of child Elián González, as well as the release and return to the homeland of the Five Heroes. His dedication to the Cuban cause was also demonstrated by his great affection for the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.
So much was his love and dedication to Cuba that, in fulfillment of his last wish, Lucius Walker’s ashes rest in this Caribbean island.

Argentine President Javier Milei has fired Foreign Affairs Minister Diana Mondino after she supported a resolution to lift the US embargo on Cuba at the UN General Assembly.

The move was announced by Milei’s office in a press statement. While the statement did not directly link Mondino’s dismissal with the UN vote, it was released shortly after it and included a lengthy description of the administration’s position on Cuba.

“Argentina is going through a period of profound changes… our diplomatic corps should reflect in each decision the values of freedom, sovereignty and individual rights that characterize Western democracies,” the statement read, adding that the country “is categorically opposed to the Cuban dictatorship” and “will remain firm in promoting a foreign policy that condemns” regimes such as this. Milei’s office also warned that it will conduct an audit of the Foreign Ministry’s staff in order to root out “promoters of agendas hostile to freedom.”

Mondino was one of Milei’s first confirmed cabinet members and his top ally during last year’s presidential campaign. She will be replaced with Gerardo Werthein, who had been the ambassador to the US.

Earlier on Wednesday, the UN once again called on Washington to end its decades-long sanctions regime on Cuba in a non-binding resolution. An overwhelming majority of 187 countries voted in favor of the move, while only the US and Israel voted against it, with Moldova abstaining.

Milei has repeatedly pledged to align his country’s policies with those of the US since taking office in December 2023. He has also distanced the country from Cuba, as well as Nicaragua and Venezuela, accusing their leaders of being “despicable dictators.” Under Milei, Argentina has formally rejected an invitation to become a member of the BRICS group of nations, in a U-turn from the policy of his predecessor, Alberto Fernandez.

Argentina, Latin America’s third largest economy, is in the grip of a severe economic crisis after decades of mounting debt and financial mismanagement. An estimated 55% of the country’s population lives below the poverty line, while inflation is among the highest in the world.

The ‘shock therapy’ reforms announced by Milei when he took office and aimed at stabilizing the economy have so far been unsuccessful, as Argentina’s economy sank deeper into recession in the second quarter of this year, with GDP plunging by 1.7%, according to government data.

We, the Heads of State and Government of the member countries of the Group of 77 and China, meeting in Havana, Cuba, on September 15 and 16, 2023, for the Group’s Summit on Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation, convinced of the urgent need to act together, reaffirm our full adherence to the spirit, principles and objectives of the Group of 77 and China.
We also reaffirm the commitment to strengthen the unity and solidarity of the Group in order to achieve its objectives and to reinforce its role in the current international context. We reaffirm full respect for the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and international law.
We deeply mourn the loss of life and materials caused by the recent natural disasters in Libya and Morocco. We convey our heartfelt condolences to the respective peoples and governments, and to the loved ones of the victims in both nations.
We note with deep concern that the major challenges generated by the current unfair international economic order for developing countries have reached their most acute expression in current times due, inter alia, to the persistent negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, even though the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) for COVID-19 has been lifted by the WHO, geopolitical tensions, unilateral coercive measures, and the current multiple crises, including the economic and financial crises, fragile global economic outlook, increased pressure on food, energy, displacement of people, markets volatility, inflation, monetary tightening, the growing burden of external debt, the increase in extreme poverty, the rising inequalities within and among countries, and the adverse effects of climate change, biodiversity loss, desertification, sand and dust storms and environmental degradation, as well as the digital divides, with no clear roadmap so far to address these global problems.
