This Friday morning, Eusebio Leal Spengler died, following a long, painful illness.

In accordance with his family’s wishes, Leal’s ashes will be preserved, and once the COVID-19 epidemic is under control, in just recognition of his enduring work, our people will be able to pay their respects at the Capitol in Havana, an emblematic edifice restored under his guidance, for the benefit of the nation.

BIOGRAPHY

Eusebio Leal was born in his beloved Havana on September 11, 1942.

– PhD in Historical Sciences at the University of Havana – 2000, Master’s Degree in Latin American, Caribbean and Cuban Studies, Specialist in Archaeological Sciences, 1975 Bachelor’s degree in History

-Postgraduate studies in Italy in restoration of Historical Centers, on a scholarship granted by the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs – 1980

-Member of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee since its IV Congress in 1991

-Deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power from 1993 to date.

-United Nations Goodwill Ambassador – 1996

-He began working in 1959 at the Havana Metropolitan Administration and in 1967 was appointed Director of the Havana City Museum, succeeding Dr. Emilio Roig de Leushenring, as the eminent intellectual’s disciple.

-He assumed direction of restoration works of the city government’s headquarters, the former Palace of the Captains General and the Captain’s residence, completed in 1979.

-In 1981 he was given the responsibility of conducting restoration works approved by the City government on May 5 of that year.

-On April 16, 1986 he is assigned the responsibility of the works on the San Carlos de La Cabaña Fortress and, later, the Morro.

-Historian of the City of Havana

-President of the Cuba – Mexico Parliamentarian Friendship Group.

-Vice-president of the Cuba-Japan Parliamentarian Friendship Group.

Frank País and Raúl Pujol were murdered in Santiago de Cuba. The rebellious city wears the 26th and sings the Bayamo anthem. Today is Martyrs’ Day. Glory to those who had only their young, promising lives, and gave them for the homeland”

SANTIAGO DE CUBA.— The First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee, Army General Army Raul Castro Ruz, sent a floral tribute to honor Frank Pais Garcia on the 63rd anniversary of his brutal assassination, placed alongside his tomb, during the people of Santiago’s customary commemoration every July 30, Martyrs of the Revolution Day.

Central Committee members and leaders of the Provincial Defense Council, Lázaro Expósito Canto and Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, presided the events in the city’s patrimonial Santa Ifigenia Cmetery, with the participation of other representatives of the Party, government, the Young Communist League, mass organizations, the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior.

Floral wreaths from Army General Raul Castro, President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, National Assembly of People’s Power President Esteban Lazo Hernández, and the people of Cuba, were placed before the pantheon of July 26th Martyrs.

The Presidents of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, Nicolás Maduro Moros and Daniel Ortega Saavedra, respectively, participated, yesterday, in an online meeting of leaders, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Sao Paulo Forum.

The meeting, moderated by Monica Valente, executive secretary of the movement, took place on the day that Our America and the world remembers as the 66th anniversary of the birth of Commander Hugo Chavez Frias, at a time when the planet is immersed in the COVID-19 battle.

The President of the Republic of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega Saavedra, condemned the recent attack on the Venezuelan Consulate in Bogotá, Colombia; an act that violates the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and adds to the aggression against Caracas perpetrated by the government of Iván Duque.

He expressed his nation’s solidarity with the Cuban people, “who for more than 60 years have resisted numerous aggressions, in addition to an unjust blockade, by the United States.”

He recognized regional integration efforts promoted by the Sao Paulo Forum in organizations like the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP).

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, stated, “We are the historical continuity of Latin America and the Caribbean. Today we are celebrating 30 years of the São Paulo Forum.”

He recalled that this July 28 was the 66th anniversary of the birth of our eternal Comandante Hugo Chávez Frías and presented a video featuring a selection of speeches and moving moments in the Venezuelan leader’s life, as a tribute.

Maduro added, “The Forum has been a great democratizing, vanguard force, the force that brings together the most parties and movements, the broadest, most inclusive and representative body of the last 30 years in Latin America and the Caribbean.”

He concluded emphasizing that this coordinating body must be strengthened and that the São Paulo Forum “is more alive than ever”.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez thanked Forum members for their solidarity with our country and stated, “Cuba we will continue on the independent and sovereign path, with the people leading the way. There will be no pandemic, no blockade, no imperial pressure that will change our course.

“To political forces in the Sao Paulo Forum, we call on you to mobilize in unity to face the new challenges, along with social and popular movements and intellectuals of the left.

“The true, definitive independence of Our America depends on the character, strength and correctness for our current struggles.

“We will continue, alongside the Sao Paulo Forum, to contribute to the unity and integration of Latin America and the Caribbean.

“History is made by the people, even if it is written by others. No empire can decree its end as long as there are chains to be broken, walls to be demolished, exclusions and abuses to be fought.

For the life and independence of our peoples; for the legacy of our founders, who taught us that even in the most difficult conditions it was always possible, it is always possible and will always be possible; for the new generations giving continuity to the struggle, as Maduro explained; for anti-imperialist unity that is the tactic and strategy of victory: We will fight, we will live and we will triumph! (Applause).

“…You took the light of hope, affection and solidarity on these missions,” stated the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, addressing health professionals who, as part of the Henry Reeve Contingent, joined the COVID-19 battle in the Italian city of Turin and in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, during a meeting July 29, held at the La Pradera International Health Center to welcome them home, in which Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz also participated, among other national authorities.

This is the essence that defines and arms us as a nation and around the world, with more strength in these difficult months of confronting the pandemic, the President emphasized, because for our health personnel, “medicine is not only science, it is also humanism.”

Among the brigade members who took the floor was Dr. René Aveleira Cutiño, a specialist in Hygiene and Epidemiology, who served in Turin. “We were 38 Cubans representing the essence of a country,” he said.

Dr. Luis Miguel Osoria Mengana, specialist in General Comprehensive Medicine and Surgery, one of the youngest to travel to Italy, commented on how gratifying it was to have the opportunity to expand his knowledge, during the hard work carried out over these months, adding, “Know that you can count on young people for whatever is needed.”

At first they saw us as “extra-terrestrials,” recalled Osmani Machado Rojas, a specialist in primary health care who was part of the brigade in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. As the days passed, he said, we became “health professionals providing care to a patient. In the streets and hospitals, the recognition of Cuba never ceased, he said.

Definitely, with our health professionals, Cuba was in Turin, as well as in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and many other nations where they have come to save lives, to leave our essence.

Intellectual and journalist Enrique Ubieta Gómez traveled to Italy with the Henry Reeve brigade, as the chronicler of Cuban collaboration in times of pandemic, the President noted. “When the doctor touches the patient’s hand, speaking with affection, when there is a human relationship, the patient recovers faster. This is not in the books, it goes beyond. And there, beyond, they have all carried the essences they learned well at home,” Ubieta concluded.
