 Address by ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta, Cuba’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, in the United Nations General Assembly Emergency Special Session on Ukraine. New York, 1 March 2022

 

 

 



Mr. President,
Last 26 February, the Cuban Government issued a Statement on the events in Ukraine, clearly adopting a stance in favor of a solution that guarantees the security and sovereignty of all and addresses legitimate humanitarian concerns.
Cuba champions International Law and is committed to the Charter of the United Nations. Cuba will always defend peace and unambiguously oppose the use or threat of use of force against any State.
That is why we firmly support the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, signed in 2014 in Havana by the Heads of State and Government of our region.
Cuba is also committed to International Humanitarian Law and calls on all parties to protect the civilian population, their possessions and infrastructure.
We deeply regret the loss of innocent civilian lives in Ukraine. The Cuban people have had and continue to have a very close relationship with the Ukrainian people.
Mister President,
It is impossible to make a rigorous and honest examination of the current situation in Ukraine, without carefully assessing the factors that have led to the use of force and non-observance of legal principles and international norms.
Cuba strongly endorses and supports those principles and norms, which are, particularly for small countries, an essential reference to fight hegemony, abuse of power and injustice.
The U.S. determination to continue NATO’s progressive expansion towards the Russian Federation borders has brought about a scenario with implications of unpredictable scope, which could have been avoided.
The United States’ and NATO’s military moves in recent months towards regions adjacent to the Russian Federation, preceded by the delivery of modern weapons to Ukraine, which altogether add up to a military siege, are well known.
Ignoring for decades the well-founded claims of the Russian Federation for security guarantees and assuming that Russia would remain defenseless in the face of a direct threat to its national security was a mistake. Peace cannot be achieved by sieging or cornering States.
History will hold the United States accountable for the consequences of an increasingly offensive military doctrine outside NATO’s borders, which threatens international peace, security and stability.

Rest assured that the Cuban Revolution will never surrender, stated Party First Secretary and President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, addressing progressive journalists, political activists and expert social media influencers participating in the international colloquium for the 130th anniversary of the newspaper Patria, founded by José Martí.
Díaz-Canel received the communicators at the Palace of the Revolution, for an informal, sincere meeting, to, as he said, “Thank you for your work in defense of the truth and of Cuba.”
Over the past few days, some twenty activists on social media and other multimedia and traditional platforms, from several countries, gathered at the Casa de las Americas, on the occasion of Cuban Press Day, to discuss the challenges of the left in a world where imperial hegemony in the virtual and symbolic field is overwhelming, but must be confronted.
For more than an hour, the President described Cuba’s context and current situation for the guests, to then open an exchange during which expressions of solidarity with the island were accompanied by extensive analysis of the struggle in communications, for our people’s culture and for Cuba.
Today’s convulsive world, which hegemonic powers seek to dominate, is a world we must change, Díaz-Canel stated, both in the real and the virtual world.

Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee First Secretary and President of the Republic cited three elements that are sustaining and aggravating the world’s current difficulties, during his closing remarks at the Ministry of Culture’s annual review for the year 2021, held at José Martí National Library.
The tightened United States’ economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba; the aggressiveness of the United States internationally; and the uncertainty created by covid-19 were the three issues impacting the current situation he emphasized.
With regard to the blockade, the President said that we are now experiencing a different moment, a particular feature of recent years, “Things began to get very complicated in the second half of 2019, when the Trump administration adopted more than 240 measures that cut off our sources of financing. They placed us on their list of countries that allegedly support terrorism. And all this has been maintained under Joe Biden’s administration,” he explained.
The blockade, he recalled, has caused shortages, financial persecution, persecution of fuel suppliers, in particular, and to this was added the even greater aggressiveness of the U.S. government against Cuba, with a broad media campaign demonizing our country, in an attempt to discredit all elements of the Cuban Revolution, seeking to construct the appearance of total failure, that everything is wrong and everything the country does to mitigate current conditions does nothing to solve the problems, he stated.
The President pointed out that this aggressiveness can be seen in the way the events of July 11 were addressed and the way a play was staged, announcing to the world that on November 15 the Cuban Revolution would collapse, and now they are attempting to distort Cuba’s position with respect to the current events in Europe. Cuba closes Saturday with 482 new Covid-19 infections and one deceased

At the close of yesterday, March 5, 7,238 patients were hospitalized, 4,830 suspected, 43 under surveillance, and 2,365 confirmed active.

For COVID-19, a total of 11,239 samples were taken for surveillance on the day, with 482 being positive for 4.3% positivity. The country accumulates 13 million 155 thousand 339 samples carried out and 1 million 072 thousand 956 positives.

Of the total cases (482): 474 were contacts of confirmed cases, 2 with a source of infection abroad and 6 without a specified source of infection. Of the 482 diagnosed cases, 294 were female and 188 male.

5.6% (27) of the 482 positive cases were asymptomatic, accumulating a total of 145,264, which represents 13.5% of those confirmed to date.

Of the 482 diagnosed cases, they belong to the age groups: under 20 years old (112), 20 to 39 years old (142), 40 to 59 years old (126), 60 and over (102).
