Solidarity activists and friends of the Revolution will join the Cuban people May 1, to celebrate International Workers’ Day, and will complete a full agenda including visits to workplaces, theoretical debates and the May Day march to Havana’s Plaza de la Revolución.

Ismael Drullet Pérez, a member of the Federation of Cuban Workers (CTC) Secretariat, described a series of activities planned for the more than 1,000 visitors, April 30 through May 2.

“The activities will be dedicated to the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, as a great symbol of international solidarity, to the 64th anniversary of the Revolution and the birth of our National Hero José Martí,” the union leader reported, noting that our friends will be able to observe Cuba’s reality firsthand and see how our people are struggling against the United States blockade.

“The activities will begin on the 30th with visits to workplaces in sectors and branches of the Cuban economy that are the most representative of society, where they will learn about the blockade’s impact,” Drullet stated. “At every workplace, a union meeting will be held to express opinions about imperialist aggression,” he added. Neighborhood visits are scheduled April 30, where the visitors will be welcomed by Committees for the Defense of the Revolution and enjoy community artistic talent. The next day they will participate in the May Day march to José Martí Plaza de la Revolución, and May 2, a solidarity conference will be held at the Convention Center, where Political Bureau member and CTC general secretary Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento will speak, and the impact of the blockade, in Cuba and beyond, discussed. Also included on the conference agenda are the consequences of the multidimensional global crisis, exacerbated by covid-19 and neoliberal policies; solidarity among the world’s peoples facing escalating aggression by the U.S. government and Western powers; slander campaigns directed against Cuba’s international medical collaboration programs; as well as peace and the sovereignty of peoples. The event will conclude with the approval of a Declaration of Solidarity with Cuba and proposals by participants on plans to join forces in the struggle against imperialism and the advancement of progressive change in the world.

Cuba and the United States, on April 21, held a round of migration talks, headed by Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Carlos Fernández de Cossío Domínguez, and the U.S. State Department’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Hemisphere, Emily Mendrala. During the talks, compliance with bilateral migration agreements and the commitment of both parties to ensuring regular, safe and orderly migration were reviewed. According to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Cuba’s representative reiterated our concern regarding U.S. government measures that incite migration, prevent legal and orderly migration, and generate socioeconomic conditions that encourage emigration. Cossío also stressed that these measures, including those associated with the tightened U.S. economic blockade, cause loss of life and the commission of crimes including smuggling, immigration fraud and human trafficking, a situation that affects both countries and the entire region.

The Cuban delegation insisted that the U.S. government is committed to annually issuing at least 20,000 visas in Havana, for Cubans to emigrate to that country, a commitment that has not been met since 2017. Cossio emphasized that there is no justification whatsoever for eliminating consular services in Cuba and obliging visa applicants to travel to Guyana to submit their requests, also reiterating that the United States must end its obstructions and violation of Cubans’ right to travel to third countries in the region and demanded fulfillment of the bilateral migratory agreements in their entirety, and not selectively.

I am obliged to denounce the fact that the U.S. government has decided to exclude the Republic of Cuba from preparations for the Ninth Summit of the Americas set to take place in Los Angeles, June 8-10; and is currently exerting extreme pressure on numerous governments in the region that have privately and respectfully opposed this exclusion.
The U.S. government is misleading the public and governments of the hemisphere by saying that it has not yet made decisions regarding invitations.
I respectfully urge Secretary of State (Anthony) Blinken to say honestly whether or not Cuba will be invited to the Ninth Summit of the Americas.
A central axis, according to preparations for the event, will be health. And I must inform our people and international public opinion that there are currently negotiations underway, conducted in an unclear manner, with quite a few neoliberal elements, and many shortcomings, in relation to the real needs of the peoples regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the structural causes of precarious health systems that have led to tragic consequences and caused an extremely high number of deaths in our hemisphere, including the United States of America, and have avoided substantial cooperation and basic financing to address these consequences, and are now negotiating in an opaque manner a so-called Health and Resilience Action Plan for the Americas through the year 2030.
I must note that these negotiations are being held, in an obscure manner, with the exclusion of Cuba and other member states of the Pan American Health Organization, which are participating in these processes, in violation of their own mandates.

The nation’s Father, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes

The father who “brought us all to life”
Communist Party of Cuba First Secretary and President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez today honored the birth on this date 203 years ago, of the nation’s father, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, and 115 years ago of the Chancellor of Dignity, Raúl Roa, tweeting, “Their human values, their patriotism and Cuban identity, make latter the heir of the first, and all of us their heirs

It was the night of Sunday, April 18, 1819, when in an aristocratic mansion in the colonial city of Bayamo, a man was born to be a landholder by family inheritance, who instead, against all odds, would become “the first among Cubans able to give his country and his compatriots both a homeland and honor.”
With his own resources, he challenged a colonial power far superior in military forces and weapons, able to unite the rich and the poor to wage war in the scrub, calling slaves “brothers” for the first time, turning his family sugar mill into a altar of freedom. Thus, with the responsibility of an entire people on his shoulders, he became the eternal Father of the Nation.
In that human volcano that, as Martí said, “… brought us all to life,” Cuba has an example of dignity and decorum that we cannot ignore in any of our daily battles.
To this day, at a time when imperialism continues to interfere with an economic war and hateful campaigns, Céspedes’ response – more than a century and a half ago – serves us well: “Our motto is and will always be: Independence or death. Cuba must not only be free, but never again enslaved.”
