Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution, presided this Saturday over the political act and military ceremony on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Military Counterintelligence, established on November 7, 1962, and whose history is, by many reasons, the history of the Revolution itself.

The Army General conveyed his warmest congratulations to the chiefs, officers, non-commissioned officers, cadets, sergeants, soldiers and civilian workers of the Military Counterintelligence, through a letter read at the commemoration by Division General Víctor Rojo Ramos , head of the Political Directorate of the Revolutionary Armed Forces.

In the letter, Raúl expressed his certainty that the members of this prestigious body “will continue to preserve, with the professionalism and honesty that characterizes them, the security of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the work of the Revolution.”

Challenges, commitments, history, integrity and recognition were discussed at the tribute, held at the “Comandante Arides Estévez Sánchez” Higher Military School, where members of the Political Bureau, Army Corps General Álvaro López Miera and Division General Lázaro Álvarez Casas, Ministers of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and of the Interior, respectively. Along with them, a representation of the main chiefs of the two armed institutions, as well as founders and retirees of the Military Counterintelligence, also attended.

After the report of the Chief of the troops and the review of the same, with the corresponding greeting from the reviewing officer, Captain Roxana Díaz Prieto, a member of the Military Counterintelligence, spoke, who on behalf of the new generations of officers recognized that, even though a lot of work has been done, the challenges that lie ahead are even greater.

“For the revolutionaries there is no rest, we have to be united and work to continue consolidating the achievements made,” he emphasized.

In her words, the young officer ratified the “Party, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz and the people of Cuba, that the replacement is guaranteed, because the combatants of the Military Counterintelligence will never disappoint the confidence that the leadership of the Revolution has deposited in us.

This morning of homage was also a favorable setting for the Army General to receive, from the hands of Division General José Miguel Gómez del Vallín, head of the Military Counterintelligence Headquarters, a diploma acknowledging his status as head founder of this body of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and his work in these six decades as educator par excellence of generations of officers.

In turn, the leader of the Cuban Revolution presented a recognition to the Military Counterintelligence, whose members are distinguished by dedication, responsibility and modesty in carrying out their tasks, who during the last 60 years have protected the institution armed against the plans of the internal and external enemy.

“The date we celebrate is a glorious day for those of us who trained in this body and a privilege for those of us who have the pleasure of commemorating this 60th anniversary,” said the Head of the Military Counterintelligence Headquarters, when pronouncing the central words of the political act and military ceremony that culminated with the parade of the troops.

After taking a brief tour of various moments of the revolutionary struggle, which over the years became the founding roots of Military Counterintelligence, Division General Gómez del Vallín recalled in a special way the role played by the Commander in Chief and General of the Army, over the course of these decades.

In his speech he also recognized the founders, heroes and martyrs, from whom we inherited, he said, their sacrifice, courage and revolutionary attitude; to the collaborators “who have worked alongside us”; and particularly to the young people, who in every era have permeated their spirit of work and cemented the Revolution with the sweat of sacrifice.

For the combatants of the Military Counterintelligence, he asserted, there is no other alternative than systematic and intelligent work, with a rational and efficient use of the forces and means at our disposal, based on the deepest conviction of the importance of the work that We perform.

This anniversary ─he underlined─ must constitute a “moment of necessary reflection and critical analysis of everything we do, where objectivity and high professional rigor prevail, devoid of triumphalist criteria that make it difficult for us to appreciate reality with all its crudeness and nuances”.

In the midst of so many challenges that define the current scenario of the country and constitute an enormous challenge for women and men who make up the ranks of this military body, the Head of the Military Counterintelligence Headquarters considered it an honor that the Army General guides them, guide and demand from everyone that “every day we be more professional, disciplined, efficient and better combatants to fulfill the complex tasks and missions that lie ahead.”

This last gesture of respect was joined by the members of the Political Bureau, Esteban Lazo Hernández, president of the National Assembly of People’s Power; Army Corps General Álvaro López Miera, Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, and Division General Lázaro Alberto Álvarez Casas, Minister of the Interior.

After the solemn tribute, Raúl and Díaz-Canel arrived with the relatives present there. “Our deepest condolences and support to you at this time,” the Head of State told them, reported the website of the Presidency of the Republic.

In front of them, with his hand on his chest, the Army General nodded at the president’s words, as an expression that he also accompanied them in their pain.

Previously, other high political and state leaders did so, as well as the highest authorities of the province.

On a momentous day for the country, marked by deep pain, the people of Matanzas, representing all of Cuba, and in a disciplined and solemn manner, paid tribute to the brave, who faced the huge disaster that occurred in the Industrial Zone of the city .

It was a sad evening, but also one of honor and glory, in which there were many expressions of admiration and respect, and that, as in other difficult times and in the face of adversity, Cubans were one in pain and solidarity. .

It also became a day of accompaniment from an entire country to the relatives and friends of the fallen, overwhelmed by sadness and memories.

The tribute began at ten in the morning at the Firefighters Barracks Museum, a legendary building through which some 15,000 people from Matanzas passed, a crowd that made an endless line to reach the Plaza de la Vigía, with the purpose of offering love and peace. .

The line of people seemed endless. Many workers were seen, parents who came with their children, intellectuals, families who came to show their respect for just a short minute, some of them with a flower in their hand, without preventing the tearing by the pain of loved ones.

Floral offerings from Raúl and Díaz-Canel accompanied the urns in the funeral honors on this hard day, with a sense of tribute.

Wreaths also arrived on behalf of the National Assembly of People’s Power, the Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution, family members and the people.

The pain is great, as is the heroism displayed by the brave; and so immense has been the solidarity of an entire nation and of other latitudes.

These sad hours show us, at the same time, a people that makes unity the pillar of its greatness, said Leo García, first vice president of the National Union of Cuban Writers and Artists in Matanzas.

Shock was reflected on all faces. Few could stop the tears for the brave, eternal symbols of our country. Day of hugs, tears and encouragement, in which neither the suffocating heat nor the rain could interfere.

On a momentous day for the country, marked by deep pain, the people of Matanzas, representing all of Cuba, and in a disciplined and solemn manner, paid tribute to the brave.

Despite the anguish of loved ones, of that pain that hurts so much, what I appreciate most on a day like today is the pride of being Cuban, capable of feeling the sadness of others as my own, acknowledged Ercilio Vento Canosa, city historian .

This sad situation has aroused in the citizens a great feeling of solidarity, which shows the quality of the good Cuban, commented the notable researcher. “Here is a heroism impossible to forget.”

The testimonies and stories of the protagonists of the incident attracted attention. One of them, with indelible marks on his face, was Dionisio González, from the support forces against the fire.

“I can’t say much, only that I came here to offer the last hug to those brave men, who fought like true heroes and offered their lives to save Matanzas,” he said.

Candles of different colors and sizes, various flowers, in the midst of an atmosphere in which the shock was visible in each of the faces. Some could not hide the pain, once inside the Museum, and the feeling that overwhelmed them was evident.

The walls of the Firefighters Museum, the Sauto Theater, the Palacio del Junco Museum and other venerable buildings located in that founding site of the city, seemed to silently revere the fallen.

Some wondered what the sublime poet Carilda Oliver Labra, with her sensitivity and genius, would have written about such an unfortunate incident, so epic in itself. She who sang to Fidel, to the city, and to many heroes and martyrs.

I am here to accompany my people of Matanzas in this difficult hour, and I only hope that all this sum of solidarity and love alleviates a little the sorrows of those families, observed the singer-songwriter Raúl Torres, visibly moved.

Thinking of the people who stayed there, who risked their lives to save the people of Matanzas, is something very hard. His example and legacy will remain in the memory of the people of Cuba, and especially of Matanzas, he said, after acknowledging that they will also serve as a stimulus to continue promoting life and progress.

At the conclusion of the honor guards at the Firefighters Museum, where the people expressed their feelings of honor and solidarity, the funeral procession left for the Pantheon of the Fallen for Defense, in the local Cemetery, where the ceremony of family burial.

It was the night of Sunday, April 18, 1819, when in an aristocratic mansion in the colonial city of Bayamo, a man was born to be a landholder by family inheritance, who instead, against all odds, would become “the first among Cubans able to give his country and his compatriots both a homeland and honor.”
With his own resources, he challenged a colonial power far superior in military forces and weapons, able to unite the rich and the poor to wage war in the scrub, calling slaves “brothers” for the first time, turning his family sugar mill into a altar of freedom. Thus, with the responsibility of an entire people on his shoulders, he became the eternal Father of the Nation.
In that human volcano that, as Martí said, “… brought us all to life,” Cuba has an example of dignity and decorum that we cannot ignore in any of our daily battles.
To this day, at a time when imperialism continues to interfere with an economic war and hateful campaigns, Céspedes’ response – more than a century and a half ago – serves us well: “Our motto is and will always be: Independence or death. Cuba must not only be free, but never again enslaved.”
