Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff commented on her Facebook page, “It’s a coup,” after the Senate decision made this afternoon, May 12, to initiate the process of impeaching her.

Rousseff is now obliged to leave office for at least 180 days, as a result of the Senate vote. Of the body’s 81 members, 78 voted: 55 in favor, 22 against, with one abstention.

The President posted videos of her defense attorney, José Eduardo Cardozo, who insisted during the proceedings that judicial pretexts were being used to remove a legitimately elected President, resulting in “a historic injustice.” The nation’s Attorney General has previously said that minimum legal requirements for impeachment, such as proof of a “crime of responsibility” have not been met.

The revolutionary government of the Republic of Cuba has repeatedly denounced the parliamentary-judicial coup d’etat, disguised with legality, which has been developing in Brazil for months. A majority of Brazilian Senators to continue the process of impeachment of the legitimately elected President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, and with this “provisionally” remove her from office for a period of 180 days, during which the Senate must decide, via a two thirds majority vote of its members, to definitively dismiss her.

While Cuba and the United States have made important progress over the last 17 months, economic and commercial relations continue to be hampered by the blockade which remains in full force despite modifications, the Ministry of Foreign Relations (Minrex) reported yesterday, May 12, in a press conference.

Gustavo Machín – the Ministry’s deputy director for the U.S. – announced that set to take place in Havana, this coming May 16, is the third meeting of the Cuba-U.S. Bilateral Commission, created in August of 2015 to organize the development of ties following the reestablishment of diplomatic relations.

During this meeting, agreements reached at the last gathering, held in Washington in November, will be reviewed, as well as progress made since the Commission’s first meeting, September 11, 2015, Machín reported.

As reported in GI in March, the Co-op Bank closed the bank accounts of the British Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC) in November 2015, citing among the reasons a change in its “risk appetite” and “global regulations”.
Now, following a huge campaign by CSC members and affiliates, the bank’s Chief Executive Niall Booker has finally confirmed in writing that the closure was due to “risk” arising from the sanctions imposed on the island by the U.S. government.
Responding to direct questions from concerned CSC members, Booker stated “It is correct that the sanctions that are in place are those imposed by OFAC.”
As such, the bank has acknowledged the extraterritorial application of the blockade in closing the accounts. Obeying the sanctions imposed by the United States Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is illegal under British and European Union law.
