The First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, presided a meeting of the Political Bureau yesterday, during which the decision was made to cancel May Day parades, and postpone the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) Congress.
New measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 were also discussed.
These decisions were made in compliance with measures that the country has adopted, as part of the COVID-19 Prevention and Control Plan and was reported by the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, in the daily governmental review of nationwide efforts to combat the new coronavirus.

During this meeting, the President called on the Federation of Cuban Workers (CTC) to make proposals for May Day celebrations in accordance with current conditions, so that International Workers Day is not overlooked.

During yesterday’s meeting to review the Covid-19 situation in Cuba, President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez commented, “To the degree that everyone understands the responsibility of each one of us to others, we will be able to more efficiently confront the new coronavirus pandemic.”
Presiding the meeting to evaluate implementation of the country’s prevention and control plan, along with Prime Minster Manuel Marrero Cruz, Diaz-Canel insisted, “Each of us depends on everyone, and we all depend on each one.”
He also emphasized majority support for measures adopted and recognized the hard work of health personnel in Cuba and around the world.
Minister of Public Health José Ángel Portal Miranda presented the daily update on Covid-19 in the country, indicating that the total number of confirmed cases has reached 67.
A total of 1,539 persons have been admitted to isolation centers for observation, including 1,423 Cubans and 116 from abroad; while 36,056 persons are being monitored in their homes by primary health care teams.
Also discussed was work being carried out by the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) and Committees for the Defense of the Revolution at the neighborhood level. Teresa Amarelle Boué, Party Political Bureau member and secretary general of the FMC, reported that community leaders and health brigades have visited more than 642,560 families to ensure they have the support needed to confront the health emergency.

These are times to uphold human values. Faced with a life-threatening pandemic that is disrupting the economy and altering the social fabric across the planet, we have seen countless expressions of generosity, dedication and solidarity.
No one asked singers, musicians and ordinary people in Italy to go out on their balconies to support their neighbors, to sing and applaud health workers assisting the sick.
In Buenos Aires, from Belgrano, Caballito and Recoleta to Núñez and Quilmes, last Saturday more than a hundred Argentines came together in song to raise awareness of the importance of practicing preventive social isolation, to contain the coronavirus.
I took a moment to listen to Barcelona, where Pau Donés, leader of the group Jarabe de Palo, resurrected his song Los ángeles visten de blanco, looking to visibilize on social media “altruistic attitudes toward others, not only in terms of health, but also people who sing an opera or play the guitar.
