Cuban athletes have recently achieved significant results in international sports competitions, winning several gold medals in judo, boxing, canoeing, and athletics, reaffirming prospects for the 19th Pan-American Games Lima of 2019, scheduled in the Peruvian capital this coming July 26 through August 11.

London 2012 Olympic champion, Idalis Ortiz, won the gold medal in the +78kg division of the Judo Grand Prix in Hohhot, China, on May 26, according to the tournament website.

She started strong in the quarterfinals, defeating China’s Yafei Zhou by wazari. Then, in the semifinals, she excelled with the same technique to overcome German Jasmin Kuelbs, and in the final, faced Japan’s Maya Akiba, who was disqualified after receiving three warnings for failing to engage in combat for 45 seconds.

This victory gave Ortiz some 700 points for the world ranking, which she leads with 7,340, far ahead of her closest rival, Brazilian María Suelen Altheman (5,735).

Two other Cubans won bronze: Kaliema Antomarchi (78 kg) and Iván Silva (90 kg), while Andy Granda (+100) finished seventh.

The Cuban delegation, including six judokas, finished fifth on the medal chart, in a contest led by South Korea, with four titles and two bronzes.

When one hears about the Judo Hall of Fame, they discover, among other things that only 30 great figures in the history of the sport have achieved such a distinction. This detail demonstrates how difficult it is to be included in the select group, to which Cuba’s Driulis González was inducted last Saturday, August 22.
Four-times Olympic medalist (1992-bronze, 1996-gold, 2000-silver and 2004-bonze) and three-times world champion (1995, 1999 and 2007), the athlete from Guantanamo has been part of the national squad for 20 years, becoming an example for her teammates and a paradigm of judo worldwide.
Driulis has done it all; she commands respect in every competitive scenario while her efforts have now seen her inducted – as the only Latin American woman to date – into the Judo Hall of Fame; the second Cuban after Héctor Rodríguez received the recognition two years ago.
According to the athlete, her selection – based on yeas of hard work, results and dedication – represents one of the happiest moments of her career, stating, “But I won’t let the fame go to my head, I’ll continue to be the same Driulis as always, only a little more touched,” to journalist Joel García after the induction ceremony held in theAlauIce Palace, Astana, Kazakhstan, where the 2015World Judo Championships will be taking place, kicking off thisMon day, August24.

The Cuban delegation finished fourth in the medal count at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games in Canada, with a total of 36 gold, 27 silver and 27 bronze medals.
The boxing saw the biggest gains for the island with six titles, won by Andy Cruz, in the 56 kilogram division, Lázaro Álvarez (60kg), Arlen López (75kg), Julio César la Cruz (81kg), Erislandy Savon (91kg) and Lenier Peró (91+kg).
