Havana, (RHC)– Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel led the ceremony in recognition of women with recognized work in the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC), held the day before at the Protocol Hall of El Laguito.
According to local media, in the political-cultural act, five female federates received the Mariana Grajales Order -the highest distinction granted by the organization-, 18 the Ana Betancourt Order and seven the 23 de Agosto distinction, reported the Cuban News Agency (Agencia Cubana de Noticias).
The second secretary of the FMC, Rosmery Santiesteban, recalled the figure of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro, the main promoter of the creation of the Federation along with the heroine Vilma Espín.
About the recognized women, she detailed that they have been an inseparable part of important processes, defending the right of women to participate in all the scenes of the country’s life.
For her part, the Republic’s Heroine of Labor, Bertha Luz Rodríguez, who was awarded the Mariana Grajales Order, expressed her pride and joy for achieving this important distinction, and said that during the ceremony many memories and anecdotes related to her work in the organization came to her mind.
The FMC develops policies and programs in the Caribbean nation aimed at achieving the full exercise of women’s equality in all areas and levels of society.
Since its creation on August 23, 1960, the Federation’s main objective has been the incorporation of women into society and employment, as well as into the program of social and economic changes underway in the country. (Source:PL)

Mother Cuba

Mother Cuba
The Federation of Cuban Women, which has placed Cuban women in the center of the Revolution, today celebrates its 59th anniversary. Granma presents a tribute to all women, and to Cuba

If Cuba were a woman, she would be called Mariana, like the strong mother who forged warrior children.

If Cuba were a woman, she would wear a long dress with white and blue stripes and a star on her chest.

If Cuba were a woman, she would enchant, not with her silhouette of a Caribbean queen, but with the strength of her character, with her courage.

Her colors would be the green of the fields, the blue of the sea that caresses them, the red of the blood of her people in the wars of independence.

She brought freedom to life in a difficult, prolonged birth. Then she gave birth to the Revolution and cradled it in her arms. She has born valuable men and women, tireless fighters.

She dresses every day with palms, and although small, does not know the word fear. A good while ago, she learned to fight giants.

Her life has not been easy. She has been obliged to resist, impose herself, like the great women who could not abide oppressive norms and decided to fight.

Having her as a mother gives us infinite pride. We are all brothers and sisters of a single people.

Yes, Cuba must be a woman and thus, within the beauty that surrounds her, her loving children contemplate her proudly. Continue reading Mother Cuba

Why do Cuban women support the Revolution so firmly?

Cuban women support the Revolution sofirmly, so enthusiastically, so loyally… because it is a revolution that means double liberation for women. Women are a part of the country’s most humble sectors… women face discrimination not only as workers, but as women, as well

I told a compañero that this phenomenon of women in the Revolution was a revolution within another revolution. And if we were asked: what is the most revolutionary thing that the Revolution is doing, we would answer that the most revolutionary thing the Revolution is doing is precisely this; that is, the revolution that is taking place within the women of our country. If we were asked: what are the things that have taught us the most in the Revolution, we would answer that one of the most interesting lessons that revolutionaries are receiving in the Revolution is the lesson that women are giving us. (…)
What is occurring to us, in reality, is that this potential force is superior to what the most optimistic of us could have ever imagined. And that is why we said that, maybe in the background, unconsciously, unconsciously there was some prejudice, or there was some underestimation, since reality is demonstrating, just beginning to march along this path, all the possibilities and all the roles women can play in a revolutionary process (…)
If women believe that their situation within society is optimal, if women believe that the revolution’s function, its revolutionary function within society, has been fulfilled, they would be mistaken.
It seems to us that women must still struggle a great deal, that women must work hard to reach the place they should really occupy (…)
If women in our country were doubly exploited, doubly humiliated, that means simply that, in a social revolution, women must be doubly revolutionary.

In recognition of their outstanding careers and the revolutionary values which have distinguished their leadership within the Federation of Cuban Women, a group of women were awarded the August 23 Distinction, yesterday August 17, a few days prior to the 57th anniversary of the organization’s founding.
Included among the honorees were four women who have served the organization for more than 40 years.
Tania Margarita Cruz Hernández, director of the International Center for Neurological Restoration (Ciren) and one of the honorees, shared with the press the pride she feels as a Cuban woman, and being able to play a leading role in the Revolution, at this important time, saying, “Without women, no revolutionary effort is possible. Our Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro, always visionary, said it before. And our dear Vilma Espín helped make it a reality.”
Another of the women recognized was Marta Hernández Romero, an official at the National Assembly for People’s Power, who spoke with Granma and noted that today women are present in all spheres of society and make up a large portion of the technical-professional workforce, while continuing to care for their families and homes.
Attending the event were Teresa Amarelle Boué, Political Bureau member and general secretary of the FMC; Sucely Morfa González, first secretary of the Young Communists League; Brigadier General Delsa Esther Puebla (Teté); and Carlos Rafael Miranda, national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution.
